Washington Recovery Meetings – A Dire Need!
The basis for recovery meetings was originally developed in 1938 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith who were both struggling with alcoholism and wanted to develop a means to overcome their conditions. Because of the stigma that can be associated with addiction and because that stigma can actually prevent people from seeking help, the founders said that Twelve Step members would remain anonymous. Of course, this is how the recovery meetings in Washington and elsewhere have formed into the organizations Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, and other similar organizations.
Recovery meetings are credited for having saved more lives than any other avenues for addiction recovery treatment. Indeed, recovery meetings are the single most popular and accessible form of treatment in Washington. Furthermore, recovery meetings can also be some of the most affordable type of measures in Washington in so many cases and make getting clean and sober actually attainable when otherwise the endeavor might be too cost prohibitive.
Almost all recovery meetings rely on that method of treatment developed in 1938 called the Twelve Steps. As recovery meetings have evolved over the years, some groups in Washington have moderated the language of the specific steps so that they are more specific to the issues at hand, meaning that the original Twelve Steps were developed for alcohol but can, for example, be effectively used for overeating addiction or sex addiction with only a small variation in language. Here are the steps as they were originally published -
1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
